    4 new school members be part of the College of Structure and Planning (SA+P) this fall, providing the MIT group creativity, information, and scholarship in multidisciplinary roles.

    “These people add appreciable power and depth to our school,” says Hashim Sarkis, dean of the College of Structure and Planning. “We’re excited for the educational vigor they create to analysis and instructing.”

    Karrie G. Karahalios ’94, MEng ’95, SM ’97, PhD ’04 joins the MIT Media Lab as a full professor of media arts and sciences. Karahalios is a pioneer within the exploration of social media and of how folks talk in environments which can be more and more mediated by algorithms that, as she has written, “form the world round us.” Her work combines computing, methods, synthetic intelligence, anthropology, sociology, psychology, sport principle, design, and infrastructure research. Karahalios’ work has obtained quite a few honors together with the Nationwide Science Basis CAREER Award, Alfred P. Sloan Analysis Fellowship, SIGMOD Greatest Paper Award, and recognition as an ACM Distinguished Member.

    Pat Pataranutaporn SM ’18, PhD ’20 joins the MIT Media Lab as an assistant professor of media arts and sciences. A visionary technologist, scientist, and designer, Pataranutaporn explores the frontier of human-AI interplay, inventing and investigating AI methods that help human thriving. His analysis focuses on how customized AI methods can amplify human cognition, from studying and decision-making to self-development, reflection, and well-being. Pataranutaporn will co-direct the Advancing People with AI Program.

    Mariana Popescu joins the Division of Structure as an assistant professor. Popescu is a computational architect and structural designer with a powerful curiosity and expertise in progressive methods of approaching the fabrication course of and use of supplies in development. Her space of experience is computational and parametric design, with a give attention to digital fabrication and sustainable design. Her intensive involvement in tasks associated to selling sustainability has led to a multilateral growth of expertise, which mix the fields of structure, engineering, computational design, and digital fabrication. Popescu earned her doctorate at ETH Zurich. She was named a “Pioneer” on the MIT Expertise Overview world record of “35 innovators below 35” in 2019.

    Holly Samuelson joins the Division of Structure as an affiliate professor within the Constructing Expertise Program at MIT, instructing architectural expertise programs.
