    Antonio Torralba, three MIT alumni named 2025 ACM fellows | MIT News

    Antonio Torralba, Delta Electronics Professor of Electrical Engineering and Pc Science and school head of synthetic intelligence and decision-making at MIT, has been named to the 2025 cohort of Affiliation for Computing Equipment (ACM) Fellows. He shares the consideration of an ACM Fellowship with three MIT alumni: Eytan Adar ’97, MEng ’98; George Candea ’97, MEng ’98; and Gookwon Edward Suh SM ’01, PhD ’05.

    A principal investigator inside each the Pc Science and Synthetic Intelligence Laboratory and the Heart for Brains, Minds, and Machines, Torralba obtained his BS in telecommunications engineering from Telecom BCN, Spain, in 1994, and a PhD in sign, picture, and speech processing from the Institut Nationwide Polytechnique de Grenoble, France, in 2000. At completely different factors in his MI Tcareer, he has been director of each the MIT Quest for Intelligence (now the MIT Siegel Household Quest for Intelligence) and the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab. 

    Torralba’s analysis focuses on laptop imaginative and prescient, machine studying, and human visible notion; as he places it, “I’m serious about constructing programs that may understand the world like people do.” Alongside Phillip Isola and William Freeman, he lately co-authored “Foundations of Pc Imaginative and prescient,” an 800-plus web page textbook exploring the foundations and core ideas of the sector. 

    Amongst different awards and recognitions, he’s the recipient of the 2008 Nationwide Science Basis Profession award; the 2010 J. Okay. Aggarwal Prize from the Worldwide Affiliation for Sample Recognition; the 2017 Frank Fast School Analysis Innovation Fellowship; the Louis D. Smullin (’39) Award for Instructing Excellence; and the 2020 PAMI Mark Everingham Prize. In 2021, he was awarded the inaugural Thomas Huang Memorial Prize by the Sample Evaluation and Machine Intelligence Technical Committee and was named a fellow of the Affiliation for the Development of Synthetic Intelligence. In 2022, he obtained an honorary doctoral diploma from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya — BarcelonaTech (UPC). 

    ACM fellows, the best honor bestowed by the skilled group, are registered members of the society chosen by their friends for excellent accomplishments in computing and knowledge expertise and/or excellent service to ACM and the bigger computing group.
